Glen Chalmers - Outdoor Activities Coordinator
Glen grew up in Melbourne and attended Blackburn High School. Always good at sport, athletics in particular, injuries forced Glen into an early ‘retirement’ from decathlon and pole vault.
Glen’s love of sport led him to obtain degrees in Human Movement and Secondary Teaching, after which Glen expanded his experience by completing a course in outdoor leadership.
Glen came to Lauriston in 2005 as the Acting Director of Outdoor Education for a term, filling a long service leave position. After travelling overseas and around Australia for six months, he returned to Lauriston last year as the Year 9 Program Coordinator.
In 2007, Glen has taken on the position of the Coordinator of Outdoor Activities explaining that: ‘The best part of my job is when I am outdoors on program with the girls. I really enjoy watching the tangible learning and enjoyment takes place.’
The highlight of Glen’s time at Lauriston so far has been ‘making a billy-cart with the Year 9 Armadale girls in 2006. I am not sure who had more fun restoring it, but at the end, the cart was sold at the Lauriston Fair live auction for $700! All the proceeds went to Breast Cancer Reseach.
For Glen, Lauriston students are unique. ‘Even in the most trying of circumstances, like frequent downpours and freezing temperatures, the girls have the spirit and determination to make the most of things.’
Jo Gray - Digital Media
After being a Lecturer and tutor in Digital Media prior to working at Lauriston, Jo has found that teaching Media Studies is extremely rewarding. Jo concentrates on creating a wonderful class dynamic and has found that the most rewarding part of the results has been the relationships created within the class. “The celebration of success at the inaugural Lauriston Oscars was really inspiring. It was fantastic to see the girls create a tangible product – one they could look back on in years to come and share with family and friends.”
Ashley Wood - Head of Humanities
Since commencing at Lauriston in 2007as Head of Humanities, Ashley teaches both VCE and IB. He believes that the 2008 results are a credit to the diligence of the girls and notes that the most successful aspect of the results to him as a teacher was seeing the girls develop their historical knowledge and skills equipping them for many different fields in their life journey. “My vision for the future Senior students us to continue to instil a love of History and encourage inquiring a mindset that is an essential part of historical thought.”
Deborah Black - Year 8 Coordinator
Deborah has been apart of the Lauriston teaching team since 2002. With an arts degree (English Major) and a Diploma of Education from Monash University, Deborah is a valued English teacher in the Senior School.
Deborah describes her role as Year 8 Coordinator last year as a highlight of her time at Lauriston. Deborah has enjoyed her involvement with introduction of the Middle Years Learning Program which ‘brings a new focus to teaching students in Year 7 and 8.’
Passionate about girls’ education, Deborah believes one of the most valuable aspects of Lauriston is its ‘focus on the girls’ education as an avenue for the development of independent and confident young women.’ She is also inspired by ‘the positive partnership fostered between students, teachers and parents as a valuable means of ensuring the well being and academic progress or our girls.’
